The word “floater” is also used to describe this coverage. Historically, Ocean Marine insurance was used to cover property from its original port, on the high seas and to it destination port. As goods were moved farther and farther inland to reach their final destination, there was a need for another type of insurance and Inland Marine insurance was developed. So even though the word “marine” is used, Inland Marine insurance is primarily used to cover property on land. In commercial insurance today, Inland Marine is most commonly used to cover equipment like bulldozers, backhoes and tools for contractors. Installation Floaters that cover property that has note yet been installed at a construction site is another type of Inland Marine coverage. Most Inland Marine policies are part of a Commercial Package policy that will contain Liability, Property or other coverage. Some,  however, are what is known as “stand alone” policies and one of the most common is Builder’s Risk. This unique policy covers a building while it is under construction and the amount it pays for a loss is determined by how far along the construction was at the time the loss occurred. Other Inland Marine policies include Motor Truck Cargo, Accounts Receivable, Jewelers Block, Trip Transit and many more. The important thing to keep in mind is that if you have property that moves from place to place, it may or may not be covered by your regular Commercial Property policy. That’s why it is important to have your business operation examined in its entirety by an experienced commercial insurance agent.
